AI Engineering Workflow Challenge
How can AI become a reliable part of engineering practice? The AI Engineering Workflow Challenge invites researchers, practitioners and students to develop innovative, transparent and responsible AI-assisted workflows for structural engineering and infrastructure management.
The challenge focuses on complete engineering workflows rather than isolated AI tools or demonstrations. Proposals should show how AI and engineering judgement interact, where human oversight is required, how results are checked and validated, and what practical engineering value the proposed workflow can provide.
Create a concept proposal, describing on max 4 pages:
the team of max 5 persons
the engineering problem addressed
the proposed AI-assisted workflow, including the role of AI tools and of engineering judgement
human oversight and validation
transparency, traceability and expected engineering value
key limitations and risks, together with the documents, datasets and other sources to be used

Up to five selected teams will be invited to develop their concepts into pilot workflows and present the results in a dedicated AI Engineering Workflow Challenge session at the fib Symposium Dresden 2027, where three awards are assigned. Each finalist submits a pilot report and a reproducibility package, uses material agreed with the organizers, and attends the symposium to present the work. An international jury of five experts evaluates the submissions.

Participation does not transfer, license or restrict any right to use, develop, patent or commercially exploit them. fib receives only a non-exclusive right to publish the title, team details and abstract, the pilot report, the presentation and a summary of the outcomes; parts marked as confidential are not published.
